Middle School science classes learned what it’s like to grow their own food this fall by planting and tending to a variety of plants in the campus garden. Begun in early September, this week they were ready to harvest!
Students also learned it’s not always as easy as it looks. Local deer were very interested in their project and ate their sunflowers completely.
Even with drought and deer, their efforts were something to be proud of, ultimately yielding radishes, kale, spinach, and other leafy vegetables. Since the gardening unit was implemented in the curriculum several years ago, it has been a tradition to use some of the kale and spinach to make crispy chips to snack on.
Both science classrooms are keeping a few potted plants with tomatoes, basil and chives in their classroom windows to see what they can keep going year-round.
