For the Springer School and Center in Hyde Park, the return to school was better than ever, thanks to several new playground pieces recently installed on the campus outdoor recreation area. This generous enhancement serves as a special back-to-school gift and is part of a larger fundraising effort that will advance over the next few years.

Late last spring, students learned of an exciting gift being donated by an anonymous friend of Springer. Students were to be given a new jungle gym – an addition that would more than double the size of the current play set. More than simply receiving the gift, students, families, and staff were given the opportunity to help select some of the forthcoming items. By popular vote, the students chose a set of three kinetic climbers. The announcement was delivered outdoors, at an all-school assembly along with another special surprise: The runner-up choice would also be gifted to the school. This meant that the set of three large-scale musical instruments would also be coming to campus. Cheers and applause indicated they were more than thrilled with the surprise outcome.
Dean of Students Shanda Arthur told the students that although the donor would like to remain anonymous, if we all clapped and shouted our thank-yous loud enough, wherever they are, they might be able to hear it!
Recess is an important part of the students’ daily experience at School. The combination of natural features and play equipment provide opportunities for a variety of experiences which are an essential counterpart to academics. Student from grades 1-8 have been making creative use of the new pieces which are already inspiring creative play and prompting new social encounters. When asked which was his favorite part of the playground, one student quickly exclaimed, “Everything!”
