Summer Safety for Students with ADHD: Tips to Reduce Temptation
June 2, 2020Summer…Summer…Summertime!
June 16, 2020It is times like these that test us. The whole world, every company, every school, and every household has been tested during this pandemic. I am going to share a story that has a happy ending and a reason to celebrate.
Back in late March 2020, sitting at home and participating in a now, ever popular Zoom meeting, our Springer Center Team was discussing the sad reality of having to cancel Springer’s popular Adventures in Summer Learning program. This program has been around for more than 20 years and has served countless students in the Cincinnati area. But, remember, I said this has a happy ending – hang with me.
Teamwork has great benefits. No one has the answers, but a team can find answers. Individuals that care very deeply about Springer’s summer work in the community decided we had to do something – something for the kids and parents out there who feel academically supported by Springer.
It is an idea that came to us, not because it was on the tip of our tongues, but because we were pushed…by a pandemic? One team member said, “What about sending activities to families?” Another person said, “These could go to anyone I know!” Another chimed in, “It has to be active – not just kids in front of a screen.” And the Springer Activity Club was born.
This is how it works. First, families select an age group; either entering grades 1-3 or entering grades 4-6. During six weeks during the summer, the child will receive a box in the mail addressed to them. Week 1 explores math, Week 2 features reading activities, the box for Week 3 is full of fun arts and crafts projects, Week 4 builds writing skills, and Week 5 gets children moving outdoors. On Week 6, your child receives a Bonus Box!
So, this is the happy ending I was talking about. Can you imagine a 6 to 12 year-old carrying in the mail for the day, and finding that their box arrived! Children will watch a video of a Springer teacher unpacking each box. Each box contains five to seven activities, including supplies. The academic activities are colorful, fun, and engaging. It will feel like toys are arriving in the mail! And maybe the best part yet, the Springer teacher who designed the activities will be available to meet by video conference with the family and child after the child has enjoyed the activities.
Springer School and Center values partnership with families and students. Springer’s Activity Club is how we are building that partnership this summer, given our unusual circumstances. We know the Activity Club is going to be a hit! Thank you.
