Look around your house now to see if you're prepared for these common risks, and reduce temptation.
- Keep firearms unloaded and locked up when you are not home. Every child knows the location of guns in the home – don’t underestimate the curiosity of a child/teenager!
- Store the gas for the lawnmower in a secure location. There is an increase in accidents involving children and gasoline in the summer.
- If you store adult beverages in the garage or in the basement rec room, move it to your closet or lock it up!
- Store car keys in a secure location to prevent unauthorized rides to get ice cream. Keep your car locked, even when it is in the garage!
- If there is a pint-sized “do it yourself-er” in the house, make sure that power tools or sharp tools are locked in a closet or storage area.
- Consider your doors. If you have an exit through the basement, install a device that sounds a tone when the door is opened. Your little explorer will need to wait for permission to leave the house.
