The end of the school year is packed with fun activities which create good memories and provide closure for students. Teachers are reflecting on student accomplishments, and hopefully students are feeling proud, too!
Even if your child isn’t part of a formal awards ceremony this year, there is much to recognize, from small steps taken to larger goals achieved.
Take time to reflect on how far your child has come this school year, noting the effort and perseverance it took to work toward goals, even those that may not have been met (yet!).
Dr. Mary Ann Mulcahey recommends looking back to moments that are sometimes less obvious:
Maybe they finally started to show all their work in math or realized that they have to take a few notes when reading the science assignment. Perhaps your suggestions seemed to meet with less resistance or there was less blaming of other people.
All students have made progress—recognizing and celebrating this helps them become aware of, and develop pride in, their improvements. So go ahead--celebrate!
